SKATER OPEN TRYOUTS -Monday, July 21, 2008!
Riverside Arena, 36635 Plymouth Road, Livonia MI
GENERAL INFO:
So you want to be a skater, but you're not sure you've got the skills? Come on out. Many of us hadn't skated in years when we joined the league. Our coaching staff will provide training to get you the skills you need to play on one of our teams. Contact hr@detroitderbygirls.com to reserve your spot today!
It takes a large commitment to be a Detroit Derby Girl. We are a "by the skater, for the skater" organization. This means we do everything ourselves - from fundraising and advertising, to the production of events.
The average skater probably devotes a minimum of 12-15 hours a week to the league, including practices (currently Monday and Wednesday nights in Livonia), meetings, and events.
You will be responsible for buying your own equipment, purchasing a $35 yearly membership from USA Rollersports (our insurance provider), and paying monthly dues (currently $30).

WHAT YOU NEED TO TRY-OUT:
Identification - a copy of your driverâs license, State ID, or other legal ID
Pads - elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, and a helmet. We will have some loaners available, but cannot guarantee there will be enough for all. You also need a mouth guard that can be purchased at any sporting goods store at a minimal price.
Skates - Quad skates only! No roller blades are allowed! If you do not currently own quad skates you may use the rink rental skates at no charge.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE:
Download and read the basic skating skills list. This will give you an idea of what to work on. Read below for a list of some of the local rinks in the Detroit metro area.
Get in shape - Roller derby is a real full contact sport. The healthier and stronger you are- the more likely you will be a successful athlete and the less likely you will get hurt!
Learn the rules - The rules of Women's Flat Track Roller Derby can be found at www.wftda.com/rules
Come to our events and Bouts - Check our Schedule for a list of current events.
