by AK-40oz.

The 5th Season opener brings you the finest in knock-down/drag-out derby!  The reigning Champions, the PistolWhippers face off against their nemesisters, The D-Funk All Stars in a rematch of last year’s Champ bout.

Everyone who was lucky enough to get tickets to the sold-out slugfest witnessed what everyone confidently called “the best game of derby played in Detroit yet!”  It went down to the final jam when Sarah “KillBox” Hipel edged out Sista Slit’chya for the ‘Whippers 2nd turn hoisting ‘Olive’ (aka The RS Cup).

Both teams return with most of their vets and even more national experience.  In the travel season Sista has tied and broken house and national records jamming for Detroit, and all your favorites have been handing out beatdowns across the nation.  This weekend they travel to Philly for their 2nd shot at WFTDA supremecy!  They’ll take on the current champs - Gotham Girls Roller Derby - on Friday night.  Check out www.derbynewsnetwork.com for the live boutcast!

Make sure you pick up your tickets for the home opener asap!  Every home bout for the past 2 seasons has SOLD OUT so make sure you ensure your seat for the 2009-2010 Season Opener!!!  Its guaranteed to be an epic match between two teams that have played to the final jam or overtime nearly every time they’ve met!

Register now for Derby! U - Sept 12-13, 2009

Posted on August 22, 2009

The Detroit Derby Girls will be hosting Derby! U, a two day workshop open to all roller derby leagues.  Click here to download the registration packet.

What is Derby! U

Derby! U started as a 2-day weekend workshop (Derby 101) to teach our potential recruits all about roller derby and the Detroit Derby Girls.  While Derby 101 will continue in the future, we were contacted by other local leagues to see if they could attend.  Since it was our first time, we decided to hold off…but now we’re ready to rock…and roll of course!

When is Derby! U taking place?

Saturday, September 12th 9 am-6:30 pm; *BONUS* scrimmage Sunday, September 13th 2-4 pm

Where?

The Masonic Temple in downtown Detroit where we play our bouts.  500 Temple St., Detroit MI.

How much does it cost?

$75 per skater; $50 per staff member; 20% discount ($15 off) if you bring a group of 10 or more people from your league (please send Racer McChaseHer an e-mail at sk8namy@yahoo.com for more information on group discounts).

What does the $75 cover?

A sweet Derby! U t-shirt, lunch, some light snacks, 6 hours of “courses,” an “after camp special” at the Magic Stick/Majestic Theatre (one of our after party venues) with NO cover, FREE bowling, $1 pizza slices, $2 Miller Lite and High Life bottles, a FREE techno show upstairs on the outside terrace, and a FREE rock ‘n roll benefit in the theatre.

*BONUS*  We will be having our Sunday afternoon “Black ‘n Blue” scrimmage taking place from 2-4 pm.  Come as early as 1 pm to warm up and stretch out.  Full scrimmage (with refs, penalty timers, etc.) starts at approximately 2 pm and runs until 4 pm.

Is there anything else going on that weekend?

Yes.  If you feel the need for speed, we have a speed skating practice the next morning about 30 min from the venue from 8-10 am.  There is an additional cost of $5 to attend.

If you don’t think you’ll be able to crawl out of bed that early then you can wait until Sunday afternoon and hit up scrimmage and then come watch Detroit’s Motor City Disassembly Line take on the Gem City Rollergirls from Dayton at Riverside Arena in Livonia (36635 Plymouth Rd) on Sunday, September 13th at 6:30 pm.  Admission is $5 for the bout at Riverside.

What you need to bring with you?

Helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, mouth guard, skates, WATER BOTTLE , willingness to learn, positive attitude, and some spending $$$ for pizza and beer afterwards.

How can I pay?

By cash on Sat. Sept. 12th (but please submit your registration form by Sept. 5th so we know that you are coming) or pay by check when you mail your registration form to Cookie Rumble.

Need a place to stay for the night?   Any other questions?

Email Racer McChaseHer at sk8namy@yahoo.com with any other questions, comments, concerns or if you are looking somewhere to crash for the night.
