Benefit for the Hecker Family at Small’s Bar Friday, July 9
Posted on July 7, 2010
Julie Hecker, of Punk Fitness Detroit, and the mover and driver behind the Detroit Derby Girls original, and one and only cheerleading squad, The Motor City Rah-Rahs, passed away suddenly last week. Julie, and the Rah-Rahs, had been with the DDG since our first exhibition bout in 2006. Julie was an incredible, vivacious, and continuously positive woman, and will be sadly missed by not only the Detroit Derby Girls, but the entire community of Detroit.
Small’s Bar is putting together a short-notice benefit for the Hecker family on Friday July 9. We’re hoping for it to be a memorial for Julie, a great party to honor her amazing and unforgettable spirit, and also a fundraiser to raise cash for her family to help with burial expenses or whatever they see fit to use it for.
For further information, go to Small’s on Facebook http://tinyurl.com/2umco8q
Donation information can be found on Julie’s website www.punkfitnessdetroit.com

Detroit Derby Girls championship bout set for Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Cobo Arena
Posted on April 30, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ticket prices for women’s roller derby championship only $15 for adults with up to two children 12 and under for free per adult
DETROIT, Mich. – Touted as one of the biggest roller derby events ever to be held in Michigan, the Detroit Derby Girls roller derby league will hold its 2010 championship bout at Cobo Arena on Saturday, May 22, 2010. All seats at Cobo will be premium, lower-bowl seats, and tickets are priced at a economically sensitive $15 for adults — with up to two children twelve and under per adult attending at no charge.
Tickets are available now at www.Ticketmaster.com or the Fox Theatre Box Office.
The undefeated D-Funk Allstars will compete against the Devil’s Night Dames, which lost only one game during its regular season.
All of the Detroit Derby Girls regular-season bouts were held at Detroit’s historic Masonic Temple and nearly all have sold out (over 900 tickets). With an increased seating capacity of 9,000 seats, Cobo Arena guarantees new fans the opportunity to procure premier seats for an up-close look at the combination of athleticism and entertainment.
Detroit Derby Girls’ President Amy Ruby, who also plays in the league under the name Racer McChaseHer, said: “The sport of roller derby and our league in particular have cultivated an impressive fan base and we have found once adults and children are exposed to it, they become diehard fans. We are so excited to offer a much larger venue for our fans and our goal is to see at least 3,000 at the championship bout at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 22.”
In addition to the derby excitement, the night will be full of other entertainment as well. The Hardcore Detroit breakdancers will be the halftime entertainment and the ticket stub from the event provides free entry into an After Party to be held at Detroit’s Majestic Theatre – featuring Nickie P and Wolfie Complex as the entertainment.
“The Detroit Derby Girls league is deeply committed to the city of Detroit,” said President Ruby. “We have had opportunities to hold our bouts elsewhere, but we take great pride in having ‘Detroit’ in our name.”
The league is also strongly committed to making a difference in the Detroit community, according to Ruby. It has supported Detroit-based charities for several seasons including Orchard’s Childrens Services and the Soujourner Foundation. For the past two seasons Alternatives for Girls has received 50/50 raffle proceeds from each bout. And, it participates in Detroit’s UCCA Garden Project and has donated vegetables grown in its plot to Gleaners Food Bank.
A Detroit Derby Girls bout consists of two 30-minute halves, with each half made up of several jams lasting for up to two minutes of fast-paced, unpredictable action.
Some of the finest roller-derby athletes in the country will compete in the May 22 championship. The undefeated D-Funk Allstars are led by Fatal Femme and Roxanna Hardplace, with support from veteren jammers Sista Slit’chya and boo d. livers. The Devil’s Night Dames feature stars Vicious Vixen, Whiskey Soured, Racer McChaseHer, and promising rookie Formosa Fury.
The sport includes plenty of fast-paced action but, unlike what you might remember while watching roller derby from many years ago, no fighting or rough-housing is allowed. And, both major and minor penalties, as in the sport of hockey, can play a pivotal role in points scored and the eventual winner, according to Ruby.
