The Detroit Derby Girls (DDG) Travel Team takes on Arch Rival Roller Girls (ARRG) of St. Louis, Missouri this Saturday the 31st at the Masonic Temple here in Detroit at 7:00 p.m.  Currently, DDG is WFTDA ranked at #12 while ARRG is positioned at #20.  Don’t let the 8 point position difference fool you though, as ARRG proved in Fall Brawl ‘08 they are quite comfortable coming in as the longshot and dominating the floor.  Then again, DDG is notorious for its heavy hitting and relentless pace.  It should make for a very interesting travel team season opening bout.

Recently, I chatted with Grave Danger, ARRG’s #6FU, for a little pre-bout Q & A:

Can you give our fans some insight on what to expect from Arch Rival’s playing style?

What you can expect from Arch Rival is a lot of hard, calculated hitting, excellent pack work, and an unmatched drive and determination from every jammer to put as many points on the scoreboard as possible.

What are your team’s strengths?

We have a very diverse roster – a lot of skaters that can play several positions including jammer. That helps us to switch up the lineup quickly when we need to make adjustments.

When you hear the name Detroit Derby Girls what comes to mind?

Speed. Rumor has it, the DDG jammers are a force to be reckoned with.

ARRG was the dark horse of the Fall Brawl ‘08. Can you tell us what it was like going into the tournament as an underdog and coming out victorious?

I think they forgot to tell us that we were the underdogs. We knew going in that no one knew a lot about us and that we would face some pretty stiff competition from Cinci and Grand Raggidy. But we stuck to the game plan and never lost our heads when we were down. The victory was definitely the highlight of our season and a huge win for our league; we hope to build on that momentum this season to establish our reputation in the WFTDA.

Do you have a favorite derby drill?

In the off season, we’ve focused a lot on our pack work and containment. Currently, my personal favorite is 2 vs. 1 or 3 vs. 2 drills. Not very exciting to report, but a great drill to get one-on-one time with jammers and blockers to find out what works and strengthen individual communication, raising the playing level of the team as a whole.

If you had to entertain a Detroit Derby Girl in St. Louis for a day, where would you take her and what things would you do?

Well, of course, we’d have to take a trip to the Arch; it’s the must-see for anyone passing through St. Louis. The City Museum is another can’t-miss that is beyond words – the entire building is an interactive work of art and hours of entertainment, from the World Aquarium to the 7-story slides to MonstroCity.

The awesome thing about St. Louis is the public attractions – Forest Park is home to the Art Museum, Zoo, and History Museum. All of these are free to the public… always!

Thank you so much! Good luck, Detroit! We’re looking forward to meeting you on the track!
